In affiliate marketing, an affiliate agrees to promote a business's website. If that traffic that is sent to the merchant's website is converted into some kind of action, like a visitor purchasing a product on the merchant's website or a visitor becoming a lead for the company, the affiliate who made the referral will get paid . Compensation may take the form of either a percentage sales commission for the sales produced or a fixed fee upon the application of the affiliate on the company's affiliate program.
Affiliate marketing has become very popular because it promises great internet income opportunities for the merchant as well as the affiliate. In fact, almost every web business or retailer site today offers an associate program. Most retailers entice people to become affiliates or members of their program by promising great benefits like large commissions, lifetime commissions, get paid per click incomes and a lot of other benefits. But do all these affiliate programs deliver the same rewards?
Quite a few affiliate programs pay you, as an affiliate, a one-time commission for every sale or lead you bring to the company's website. Payments for this kind of affiliate program are usually large, ranging from 20% to about 60%. Other affiliate programs pay you a fixed fee for customer or traffic you send to the company's site. Referral programs like this often pay a smaller commission for every visitor, usually not paying commissions larger than than fifty cents. The benefit of this kind of program, however, is that the referred traffic won't have to buy anything in order for the affiliate to earn an income.
Image by Photos8.com via FlickrA different type of associate program is the residual income affiliate program. Residual affiliate programs usually offer only a small percentage of sales commission for every sale directed by the affiliate to the company's site. This commission often comes only in the range of 15% to 25% sales commission. Because of this, many people don't join residual affiliate programs and would rather join the high yielding one-time commission affiliate program. Are these affiliates leaving money on the table, or are they correct in their thinking?
We can't tell, for sure, if people are making the right decision by choosing a high yielding one-time commission affiliate program. But we can honestly say that they are loosing commissions if they stay away from residual affiliate programs. Residual affiliate programs pay at a lower rate, but companies offering such kind of programs would generally pay you regular and recurring commissions for a single affiliate initiated sale! That means, for the same effort you made in promoting a particular associate program, you get paid only once in a one-time commission program, and a regular and passive income for a residual program!
So, is the idea of promoting products that offer residual profits worth promoting? Definitely yes, because you can earn more money from these types of affiliate programs in the long run! So what type of affiliate program should you join? It is not really for me to tell. But with the benefits that residual affiliate marketing can provide, it would really be unwise to stay away from such programs.
